Portable vertical

This is a simple center-loaded vertical antenna that I put together for show demos. The top telescoping section is from Buddipole, though any telescoping section will work. The loading coil was a piece of B&W Mini-ductor that I got in a deal several years ago. The base sections are 3/8” hard copper tubing from the plumbing section at the local hardware emporium. The base is made from a piece of hurricane strap with a…

Configuring gpsdrive and a bluetooth GPS puck on the 8510 went very well. So well, in fact, that I lost the link to the Ubuntu support information that I used when doing so. As a consequence, a similar setup on an Acer Aspire 1410 did not work out nearly as well. Links to support information follow. The plan is to clean up this page and document the configuration that actually worked.

March 2009

The old Panasonic 5400 has been limping along with smudged output suitable only for mailing labels and non-critical tasks. An offer for credit to recycle an old printer and an extremely good price on the HP printer at a local office supply store, along with a need to print a usable copy of a sales contract resulted in a one-way trip to the recycle bin for the Panasonic. The Panasonic is dead, long live the HP.

While not totally devoid of planning the configurations grew and ultimately became unwieldy and poorly documented. There are also individual profile folders for each user on the network, with sub-folders for each user and each machine available on the network.
This installation was an upgrade from 9.10. This is my primary laptop, and I didn't want to have to re-install all the software I've added. I use this one for program development, electronic design, PC board layout, and schematic capture, among other things. I also have quite a bit of amateur radio software installed. GPS and mapping for use with ham radio and photography geotagging are also installed.

Replaced Kubuntu 7.04 on the N1000 - upgrade failed (some issues with some of the administrative tools) and I've been wanting to try Gnome. As I had very little additional installed, no big loss.

Started with the Ubuntu graphical installer and had no issues. This was very different than my experience with this laptop and 7.04. I ultimately had to resort to the text installer and build xorg.conf by hand. Educational but frustrating.

Preliminary notes

Upgraded from 8.04 LTS. The upgrade took a while, and I still need to complete the post-install review and cleanup, but no apparent loss of functionality.

To do:

configure and verify ups shutdown.

I installed this on each of the iPaq c500 test servers as well as on the main production file and print server. As of Feb 2009, the plan is to keep a mirror of the Godaddy on one of the iPaqs and configure the second iPaq as a home network DNS server. The main file and print server has the consulting business timekeeping application, home directories for each user, and the main archive drive.

The W200 WLAN adapter applies to many of the HP/Compaq Evo notebooks. It is attached to the USB interface, though not through a standard USB connector. The adapter attaches to the lid of the notebook, in place of a plastic cover. There is also a Bluetooth adapter to provide Bluetooth connectivity to this family of notebooks.
